Writer, Editor, Communicator, Leader
From beat reporting and newsroom management to government communications, I bring a wealth of experience, technical skills and communications leadership expertise.
In government communications, I’ve overseen media relations through challenging program shifts and shifted focus to internal communications during the pandemic and more agencywide direction changes.
In journalism, I’ve led a newsroom of 14 full-time editors, reporters, designers and photographers and a team of more than two dozen freelance writers and photographers. I drove a transition to online-first reporting and an increased focus on in-depth, investigations and watchdog reporting — joining in as a contributor in many of the projects.
Managed a variety of communications during various periods including: media relations, internal communications, weekly CEO Town Halls, monthly all-hands meeting, executive communications support and ghostwriting, change communications during two different agencywide system reforms and COVID-19 pandemic. Assisted agency DEI council’s efforts.
Increased watchdog reporting through FOI requests and source development, exposing a chamber director who embezzled thousands of dollars and an EDC director who was forced out after female staff complained — over a period of two years — about his sexually charged jokes and the hostile work environment he created. Managed a daily, 4 weeklies, a monthly magazine and an annual Best of magazine and 700-person event.
Assisted in initial content creation and launch of Oklahoma Checkbook, a fiscal transparency site. Edited myriad documents for spelling, grammar, punctuation and clarity; document types ranged from press releases to insurance manuals and audit reports.
I’m deeply committed to growing my skills and knowledge through formal training, self-directed learning and self-taught skills (including learning WordPress to build this site).
